Clay Matthews: ‘I’m an awesome player, not a dirty player’

“That was kind of fun,” Clay Jr. says. “I mean, for the first 10 years of his life, he was around the NFL, fighting up there [in the stands] and eating us out of house and home. You know what those mini pizzas cost?” It was adorable and meaningful, those autumn Sundays with his boys, but Clay Jr. always made one thing clear: He didn’t care whether any of them ever played football. And, for the first 16 years of Clay III’s life, it appeared as though he didn’t belong anywhere but at the end of a long bench.
Did we lionize Seau for his toughness to the point where it was impossible for him to even consider asking for help? I think its time to take the question even further. Are we as a culture accentuating toughness as a necessary male trait to the point where our boys feel its impossible to be anything but tough? To the point where our boys are trapped and boxed in by unreasonable expectations? If we want out boys to be full, functioning human beings, we need to let them know that its OK to say when somethings not right. They need to know that its OK to stop and reassess a situation if something feels off. They need to know that its OK to go to the doctor, and more than OK to take time off after surgery to repair a broken thumb. Packers coach Mike McCarthy seems to understand the importance of attending to the person.
Clay Matthews: I’m ‘awesome player, not a dirty player’
A source said that Matthews had surgery on the thumb Monday, confirming a report by FoxSports. More From ESPN.com The Packers must find a way to maintain their pass rush in Clay Matthews’ absence, which they failed to do when he was out in 2012, writes Rob Demovsky. Analysis More Packers coverage Packers coach Mike McCarthy would not disclose any information regarding Matthews’ injury but said he hopes the four-time Pro Bowler will not miss the rest of the season. “I’m hopeful it’s not season-ending,” McCarthy said Monday. “I think we’re all hopeful, but you have to get all the opinions and make sure you always do right by the player.” Matthews, who suffered the injury in Sunday’s victory over the Detroit Lions , was injured on the final play of the third quarter when he sacked Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford for a 12-yard loss. Matthews rushed off the edge and was unblocked on the play, which was his final snap of the game. Team doctors took Matthews into the locker room shortly after the play. He was not in the locker room during the postgame media access.

Clay Matthews on Thursday wouldn’t reveal whether he was fined for his late hit on Colin Kaepernick or respond to San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh derogatory comments about him. But for all the outside linebackers’ attempts to sidestep questions about his hit on Kaepernick and the criticism from Harbaugh after the game last Sunday, Matthews when asked directly said he’s not a dirty player. PREDICTIONS: USA TODAY Sports’ Week 2 picks “Next game!” Matthews said with a smile. “I’m an awesome player, not a dirty player.” Matthews acknowledged seeing Harbaugh’s comments early this week comparing his tackle to the clothesline tackles of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s that now are outlawed in the NFL. Harbaugh also chided Matthews for not being as tough as he purports to be because he used an open hand rather than his fist to slap at offensive lineman Joe Staley, who confronted Matthews after the tackle. “Nah, I don’t have any reaction,” Matthews said of Harbaugh’s comments.
Should We Be Telling Clay Matthews—and Our Boys—to ‘Man Up?’
I’m an awesome player, not a dirty player, the Green Bay Packers linebacker told reporters with a smile on Thursday. The former USC standout was asked specifically about being a dirty player after the fallout from his late hit on San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick last weekend, the ensuing scuffle with offensive lineman Joe Staley and criticism from 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh. That was the only response Matthews gave to questions on any of those topics, including whether or not he was fined by the NFL for his actions Sunday. Um, I’m not really going to discuss all that right now, but on to the next game, Matthews said. Matthews has made the Pro Bowl in each of his four NFL seasons, helping the Packers win a Super Bowl along the way. He’s ranked in the league’s top five in sacks twice and has 43.5 in his career.

Donald Driver: ‘Greg Jennings will always be a Green Bay Packer’
Below are a few posts from Monday night. This has to be a freaking joke. Ridiculous. Christina Milian still deserves to be here. Kristen D. So sorry to see you go tonight. I had wanted you to be on DWTS for years.
Does Donald Driver want to come back?
Driver, the Packers all-time receptions leader, retired in February. During his time in Green Bay from 1999-2012, Driver was a fan favorite,a Super Bowl championand adancing machine (Driver won Dancing With the Stars); but most importantly, he was a class act. Itd be somewhat weird bringing back a player who already has a statue built in his honor andhas a street named after him (Donald Driver Way)in downtown Green Bay. Withincreasing injuries at wide receiver though, adding Driver wouldnt be such a bad idea. Packers GMTed Thompson typically doesnt liketo sign notable free agents during the season and he prefers to build his team from within. Adding Driver would be a much different situation thoughbecause of the mutual familiarity between him, the coaches and other players. With half of the receiving core seriously battered and bruised up from Sunday, this could beone of the few exceptions where Thompson would add a notable player via free agency.

Donald Driver would only come out of retirement to play for the Packers
“I talked to so many different guys and every guy that I’ve talked to said they wish they never went to another team,” Driver said. “They always wished they would’ve retired with that team that they played 10, 11, 12 years for. “When I asked them, ‘Should I go back?,’ they say, ‘If you don’t have that love for another team, don’t go back. You’re not going to get the same love, you’re not going to get the same respect that you got from them that you got from Green Bay.'” Driver is currently the Packers’ all-time leader with 743 receptions and 10,137 receiving yards, and his 61 receiving touchdowns are the third-highest total in the storied franchise’s history. Driver topped 50 receptions in a season as recently as 2010, but took a steep pay cut to remain a Packer in 2012. Driver started one of the 13 games he dressed for in 2012, and caught just eight passes for 77 yards with two touchdowns while playing in 13.6 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.
It’s Time For Green Bay Packers to Bring Back Donald Driver
(Photo: Lukas Keapproth/Press-Gazette Media) For the first time since his senior year of college in 1998, Donald Driver isnt spending his August at training camp with the Green Bay Packers. That doesnt mean that his former teammates arent on the mind of the all-time leading receiver in Green Bay history, who retired in February after 14 seasons with the team. When I played there we had the best receiving group in the National Football League, Driver told For The Win. We would challenge anyone to that test. Any one of those guys could go anywhere in the National Football League and start. The loss of Greg [Jennings] and myself, Jordy [Nelson], [Randall] Cobb and James Jones will be able to fill our shoes.

I know this, if I ever have image source to go hunting to live, I know how to do it. I can survive, I promise you that.” Who knows exactly what constitutes coming full circle in anyone else’s life, but being back in Texas this week, preparing to play in the Super Bowl before his family and friends is pretty close to a round trip for Driver. Though he has played in the era of the look-at-me-receiver, Driver has never been one to call attention to himself or his play. Perhaps this long-awaited turn on the Super Bowl stage will finally serve to win him the national respect that has been slow to come his way. A much-needed late-career course correction, if you will. Even for a three-time Pro Bowl pick.
Datone Jones waits for his turn
Thompson talked about what he liked about Jones in his press conference via Packers.com . “We added another good athlete and a guy with a little bit more speed,” said Thompson. “When you can add a little speed to the defense, we feel it’s a good idea.” That speed can come in handy. “He’s explosive off the line of scrimmage,” said Thompson. “He’s got the ability to close on the ball. He’s a good-looking kid. He’s an athletic guy.” Defensive coordinator Dom Capers was equally impressed, especially knowing he can count on Jones for all three downs.
Rookie DE Jones off to a fast start in camp for Packers, wowed by Rodgers
“He had been doing laundry all night,” Hall says. “Some of the clothes were still wet. I went out and got him storage bins so he didn’t have to take his things to school in trash bags.” Jones had five siblings, but lost an older sister to a lung illness when he was 11. His father was out of the picture. “Every day I breathe, I think about family,” he says. Jones talks about his upbringing and a question becomes obvious about a young man who is almost always smiling, on and off the field.
Datone Jones Scouting Report: NFL Outlook for UCLA DE
You can see the quickness.” The team’s top rookie gives some of the credit to four weeks of working out back home in Southern California. His intensive training Nike Datone Jones Youth Jersey with dozens of other fellow NFL players included mixed martial arts, and Jones is seeing the benefits from having an opportunity to spar with a few of the top MMA fighters, including retired champion Chuck Liddell. “Hand and eye coordination, leverage, punches, your strike, just everything,” Jones said Thursday. “It helps (with) releasing and getting off blocks more aggressively . and your conditioning. I started doing it in college. It helped me out my senior year really well, so I was like I’m not going to go away from it now.” The 6-foot-4 Jones strong-armed the opposition at UCLA last season.
Datone Jones Drafted By Packers With No. 26 Pick At 2013 NFL Draft
So for now, Jones is doing all he can to exercise patience. “We’ve got a veteran group,” said Jones, who was the 26th-overall pick in April’s draft. “All I can do is learn from these guys. “As long as I know I’m working every day and the coaches see I’m working, that’s all I can do. I don’t plan on my career being over in one year. I plan to have a long career, like Ryan Pickett. So all I can do is keep working.” Jones played 36 total snaps in the Packers’ first two games, finishing with one solo tackle and two assisted tackles. He played just 10 defensive snaps in a Week 3 loss at Cincinnati, but blocked an extra point the Packers’ first since 2005. Jones had one solo tackle in 23 snaps against Detroit in Week 4.
UCLA’s Datone Jones smiles through the bad times
(Jones was primarily a basketball player in high school before beginning football in 10th grade.) He ran the 40-yard dash at 4.80 seconds at the NFL scouting combine, and his 20-yard shuttle time of 4.32 seconds was the best at his position. “If you’re drawing up a defensive end,” defensive coordinator Dom Capers told reporters, “you’d like to have a guy with his kind of height and length.” Said general manager Ted Thompson: “Trying to add a little more speed to the defense we think is a good idea.” Put it all together, and the Packers have what they hope is an outside disruptor who isn’t named Clay Matthews . In his final season with the Bruins, Jones had 5.5 sacks and 19 other tackles behind the line of scrimmage. It would be disappointing if he didn’t win one of the starting defensive-end positions manned last season by C.J. Wilson , Mike Neal and Jerel Worthy . We’ve spent plenty of time this offseason discussing the Packers’ plans to improve against the read-option offense that ended their playoff run in San Francisco.
Datone Jones: Bigger, stronger, faster
System Jones has lined up everywhere from a zero tech nose tackle in pass situations to a stand-up pass-rusher. He usually lines up right over a guard or offensive tackle and fits in just about every defensive front and scheme. Pass Rush Jones is at his best when he is squaring off one-on-one against an offensive lineman and tries to bull-rush or even simply throw the blocker aside. As an edge-rusher, he can’t twist his hips to get around the offensive tackle and put pressure on the quarterback. Jones has the agility to stunt and twist, but his other moves just aren’t very explosive. He also fails to disengage and get his arms up to disrupt passing lanes. He’ll create sacks for others by collapsing the pocket and occasionally collect one of his own with his motor, but Jones is not a great pass-rusher on film. All that being said, when Jones does get a quarterback lined up, he buries him.

Datone Jones says Kaepernick won’t ‘be able to run’ like in 2012
“Oh, yeah. One of the things about Datone, we played quarterback read [option] teams like Nebraska, Houston and Arizona State, Spanos told Doughtery. “He does a great job of bending low and attacking and being disruptive in the backfield. In all those games, he made impact plays throughout the game, created turnovers, safeties, fumbles. He plays with extremely low pad level.” Green Bay has made a major point this offseason of addressing its ability to play against the read option. Mike McCarthy sent his staff to visit with Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M and try to learn some things about the devastating multiple-threat offense. (Although it should be noted that A&M doesn’t actually run the read option, but whatever.) And the selection of Jones, with the much-maligned Erik Walden (somehow) getting a nice free-agent deal from the Colts this offseason, makes clear just how important Green Bay believes stopping the read option is this season. Perhaps it should be. Not only is the offense one of the more dangerous weapons in the NFL today, but it’s something that Green Bay will see plenty of to start the season.
Keep running the ball at a high level. The Packers’ prolific passing game is ranked No. 2 in the NFL behind only Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos, but a big reason why Rodgers has them at 3-2 is because of the help he’s gotten on the ground. After finishing No. 24, No. 27 and No. 20 in the NFL in rushing the past three seasonswhile averaging fewer than 4 yards per carryGreen Bay has skyrocketed to No. 5 (140.8 yards per game) at 5.2 yards per carry.
Fantasy Expectations for Eddie Lacy After Randall Cobb, James Jones Injuries
Green Bay had marginal success through the air in the opening half against Baltimore, as Aaron Rodgers went 10-of-21 for 116 yards. But more than half of those yards went to either Jones or Cobb. On the other hand, Lacy enjoyed a productive first half with eight carries for 65 yards as a workhorse back, and they’ll look to ride on his back throughout the second half as their offense immediately became relatively one-dimensional when Cobb went down at the end of the half. Rodgers won’t be able to easily find Nelson and Jermichael Finley in the second half, as they’ll be blanketed by a Ravens secondary that recognizes Rodgers is without arguably his two favorite targets. With the Pack leading 6-0 at half and nothing doing for the Ravens offensively, Green Bay will repeatedly try to build more of an advantage on the ground. This is only amplified by the loss of Jones and Cobb. Should the Packers defense continue to make it difficult for Baltimore to run the ball, they could get out to a more extensive lead and put the ball in the hands of their workhorse back Lacy. PACKERS EDDIE LACY SIGNED MINI HELMET
But Green Bay is giving more than lip service to its running game for the first time in Mike McCarthy’s eight seasons. With the wide receivers decimated by injury, a potentially elite running back in Eddie Lacy and a high-powered offensive line, the Packers have shown they can be a dominant rushing team. And with Randall Cobb out indefinitely and fellow receiver James Jones hurting, that’s how Green Bay might structure its offense in the coming weeks. “I know as linemen, we want to run the ball first,” Packer left guard Josh Sitton said. “We love that. And I think we’ve shown at the start of the season that we’re certainly capable of that.” Have they ever. Green Bay threw the ball 122 times in its first three games and ran it 73, a passing clip of 62.6%.

Eddie Lacy sets career-high in rushing yards vs. Ravens, much to his fantasy owners’ approval
Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 Eddie Lacy sets career-high in rushing yards vs. Ravens, much to his fantasy owners’ approval Related In partnership with SBNation.com By Dan Ciarrocchi Packers running back Eddie Lacy set a career high in rushing yards on Sunday during the team’s 19-17 victory over the Ravens . In a tightly contested game, the rookie tailback carried the ball 23 times for 120 yards, routinely ripping off chunks of yardage versus a Ravens front seven that is no pushover. Lacy’s biggest run came late in the game on a 37-yard scamper, as he was visibly effective toward the game’s end when the defense was gassed. Fantasy Spin: This is your feature back in Green Bay for the forseeable future. Fantasy owners are just fine with that, as Sunday’s contest marks consecutive games where Lacy has recorded at least 99 yards on the ground. It’s worth mention that Aaron Rodgers could not get much going in the passing game, especially with both Randall Cobb and James Jones exiting early with injuries.
Eddie Lacy nominated as Week 6′s Ground Player of the Week
“The four-letter word,” Daniels said. “Don’t want to hear it.” Daniels admits changing perception will take time. He wants people to expect a street fight, a four-quarter brawl when they play the Packers. Lacys presence helps. Again, he pounded away at a defense for 20-plus carries. Again, the Packers offense won ugly. Green Bay isnt used to these games.
“I vowed to myself as well as my father that I would strive to do the best by him and my mother, strive to get these guys the proper health service that they need,” said Worthy, whose father is still dealing with paralysis on his left side. Worthy, a consensus All-American and projected first- or second-round draft pick, said he hasnt hired an agent, contrary to reports. His mother, Stephanie Worthy, said her son told her of his decision at the Spartans hotel in Tampa, Fla., after Michigan States Outback Bowl win against Georgia. “He told me, Im going to do it, Mom, ” said Stephanie Worthy, before adding her son made it clear that if Michigan State had lost to Georgia on Monday, hed be back for the 2012 season. “And I believe him,” she said. “He always told me, Mom, Im going to make sure I take care of you and my dad,” continued Stephanie Worthy, who said she expects her son to complete his degree in May. “Before his dad had the stroke, he was more concerned about my health.
Packers’ Jerel Worthy: ‘I’m going to play this year’
That plan should involve selecting Jerel Worthy with the 15th overall pick. While this may seem like overreaching at its worst, Worthy has first-round talent and it is baffling that he has slipped to the second round on a lot of boards. The Michigan State behemoth would be worth the reach from the Eagles and would give the defense a more well-rounded player at the tackle position. Worthy’s best attribute is his ability to gain penetration. He excels at attacking and splitting gaps, a crucial requirement in Philadelphia’s attacking line schemes. His off-the-snap speed cannot be matched by any other true defensive tackle in this draft class. This is the kind of attribute that enables Worthy to threaten the A-gap in shifted fronts and also makes him a natural 3-technique pass-rusher. Worthy would therefore be a perfect fit in the Eagles double 3-technique alignments.
Once he has the edge on his blocker, Worthy does a good job ripping away. Opponents used fullbacks as extra pass protectors in the interior against Michigan State, but Worthy easily tosses smaller blockers to the ground. Worthy is a thick, low-center-of-gravity defender (translation: huge butt) who can get leverage on his blocker and shove him backward when he does not win the first-step battle. Cons: Worthy draws a lot of double teams, and he often gets blown backward against two blockers. All of that extra attention takes its toll, and Worthy looks gassed at the ends of some games. It is hard to hold that against him you try battling two Georgia offensive linemen through multiple overtimes but Worthy will have to improve his conditioning in the pros. Worthy’s “jump the snap” routine does lead to some penalties.
The Shutdown 50 — #25: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State
Worthy never really came on during his rookie year and C.J. Wilson started the majority of the time at the defensive end slot opposite Ryan Pickett. Worthy finished the season with 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks. People will point to Adrian Peterson as a guy who suffered a late-season ACL injury and returned early the next season (Peterson started week one). Hes clearly the exception to the rule. The norm is someone like Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, who got injured in last seasons playoffs and didnt play at all this season.
Jerel Worthy Says He’s Playing This Season
Im just going to continue to take it day by day. Ive been blessed to not have any setbacks to this point. Weve been at this for 4-5 months now, so as long as I continue to stick to the plan and I continue to stay positive, Ill be good. Just stick to the plan. Stay on task. Treatment is a must day-in and day-out, trying to prevent things.
Spartans’ Jerel Worthy entering draft
Bennett: A Worthy Conversation ESPN.com’s Brian Bennett talked to Jerel Worthy on Thursday about his reasons for turning pro, what led to his decision and his thoughts on Michigan State’s future. Blog A key cog in a Spartans defense that ranked fifth nationally in the FBS this season, Worthy finished with 30 total tackles, including 10 for loss, 3 sacks and two blocked kicks. He has been projected as a potential first- or second-round pick in the April draft. Worthy was Michigan State’s first All-American defensive tackle since Ronald Curl in 1971. He helped the Spartans go 11-3, winning the Big Ten Legends Division title and beating Georgia 33-30 in triple overtime at the Outback Bowl. He also said his father suffered a stroke before the start of the 2010 season, something which impacted his decision. “My father is slowly but surely progressing back to where he needs to be,” Worthy said.
