Jordy Nelson Injury: Updates On Packers Star’s Ankle

Jordy Nelson out for Packers training camp after knee procedure

[+] Enlarge AP Photo/Morry Gash Jordy Nelson underwent knee surgery Tuesday but the Packers are hopeful he’ll be able to return by Week 1 when Green Bay faces the 49ers. Nelson dropped out of practice late last week and did not participate in the team’s scrimmage on Saturday night. McCarthy said he is hopeful that Nelson will return in time for the regular-season opener at San Francisco on Sept. 8. Another receiver, Randall Cobb , dropped out of Tuesday’s practice because of a biceps injury.

Packers’ Jordy Nelson skilled at sideline catches

As Fox Sports Jay Glazer notes, Nelson was questionable for this contest due to his ailing hamstring. RT @ nickweidman : @ jayglazer How’s jordy nelson looking for Sunday?>much better shape than he was in this time last wk but still iffy Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) November 2, 2012 Despite his attempt to play through the pain, his day may be done due to a different injury. This string of poor luck is even more unfortunate considering Nelsons form heading into the Packers game against Jacksonville. He caught nine passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns against the Houston Texans , then reeled in eight passes for 122 yards and another score the following week against the St. Louis Rams .

Stereotyping the Packers’ Jordy Nelson

A lot of it has to do with the fact that guys look at him say, “Okay, yeah, he’s the white guy, he can’t be that good.’ Well, he is that good.” “It’s easy for someone to say, ‘Oh yeah, he’s like one of those other white receivers,'” Jennings, who is black, told the newspaper. “He’s not. I’m sorry. He’s not. He knows how I feel about it. Maybe I’m a little biased because he is a teammate, but from watching him day one to right now, totally different player.” Quarterback Aaron Rodgers agrees with his receivers. “When you see Jordy out there, you think, ‘Oh well, he’s a white wide receiver. He won’t be very athletic,” Rodgers said on his weekly ESPNMilwaukee radio show . “I am not sure why he keeps sneaking up on guys.” Eventually, opponents are going to have to dismiss the white receiver stereotype – or continue to pay the consequences.

The 28-year-old has mastered the art of the sideline catch. Few receivers own the boundary like him. Since 2010, Nelson has been an acrobatic Gumby. The trapeze acts are routine. In sync with Rodgers, Nelson usually knows when to run, come to a screeching halt and contort his body around for the catch.

Per McCarthy, Nelson will miss the rest of the Packers offseason program after undergoing a “procedure” on his knee. The Packers coach is “hopeful” that Nelson will be ready for Week 1 against the 49ers but the timing of the injury is certainly concerning. Nelson played in just 12 games in 2012 — and just 10 of which were starts — with a hamstring injury, though he did still manage 49 catches for 745 yards last season. That was somewhat of a disappointment after a breakout year in 2011 when Nelson caught 68 passes for 1,263 yards while emerging as one of Aaron Rodgers favorite targets. McCarthy did say that left tackle Bryan Bulaga is still not officially ruled out for the season , despite reports, but the team was waiting on another medical opinion to confirm his status. Still, for a team as likely to challenge for a Super Bowl run as Green Bay, there’ve been an awful lot of injuries (even minor ones) to major players pretty early in the season.

Jordy Nelson, Johnathan Franklin

The son of farmers and a Kansan, Nelson wears his hair in a crew cut and still squints in front of television camera lights. He physically recoils in the public spotlight and really means it when he says: “I just prefer to do my job every day in practice, and in the game, and then go home and hide out with the family.” Nelson is a blue-collar Midwesterner if there ever was one, a condition that will be increasingly difficult to maintain after a stretch of games that could catapult him to the Pro Bowl. Nelson caught two more touchdown passes Sunday in the Green Bay Packers ‘ 35-26 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , including the game-clincher, and brought his season total to nine with six games remaining. Week 11 Coverage Monday Night HQ How understated is Nelson? Discussing his performance Sunday, the best word that coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers could come up with was “consistent.” Added McCarthy: “I wish I could be more complimentary: He is so consistent and he’s the same guy every day, and thats huge on a lot of different fronts… .” Which is largely why Nelson seemed so out of place last week in a national discussion about the speed and perception of white receivers. We touched on the topic twice, wondering whether opponents were truly underestimating him because of race or whether they have made a schematic decision to focus on other players in the Packers’ offense. Regardless, Nelson said the issue made him “uncomfortable” as it played out last week. He said he laughed when an official, and even some Bucs players, referenced it on the field Sunday. But you don’t have to know Nelson well to recognize he wasn’t going to dip his toe into those social waters.

Aaron Rodgers: The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Cheese

Aaron Rodgers impressed with Robert Griffin III’s feel for the game

Is the weight of the cheeseheads on Rodgers shoulder (pad) too heavy for him to bear? Until this years win against the Redskins, the Packers went 44 straight games without a 100-yard rusher. Head coach Mike McCarthys second round draft pick, Eddie Lacy, was designed to take some pressure away from Rodgers, however Lacy suffered an injury in week two. It must be awful lonely, standing five yards back in shotgun formation with no available running backs left to block a blitzing linebacker, but luckily for the sake of Rodgers impending concussion, a bye next week will give the banged-up team some recovery time. Injuries are pounding the Packers, and with nine starters on injured reserve, Rodgers suddenly isnt the God of all quarterbacks anymore. Theres no Batman without Robin. The fact is, Rodgers cant be a hero without Jordy Nelson to go up and grab the passes that arent perfect, a healthy offensive line to protect him and brick walls for running backs to block in the backfield. All jabs aside, Rodgers is the voice of Wisconsin. In the SI article, Rodgers said, Im a Wisconsin guy.

As Rodgers came off the field, he had an intense exchange with McCarthy that was caught on camera and shown on the game broadcast. “I think anytime you get into a situation where there’s a change in rhythm and personnel and play calls, things like that, it’s frustrating,” McCarthy said Sunday. “I had called a certain play in a certain situation, and he was frustrated by it. I feel good. One [disagreement] every three weeks would be awesome.” Added McCarthy during his postgame news conference: “He’s competitive, man. That’s what I love about him. I didn’t really think it was that big of a deal, frankly.” Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji was seen trying to calm Rodgers on the sideline. It wasn’t the first time Rodgers showed frustration with McCarthy during or after a game.

He did so by ranking among the top five in the league and posting the highest quarterback rating ever for a rookie. Griffins mobility led to injuries on multiple occasions, and this year, he hopes to rely less on his legs although he isnt afraid of taking off running if an opening presents itself. Finding that balance will ultimately lead to greater effectiveness and longevity. Asked about that balance, Rodgers said: Its got to be a feel thing. Robert is definitely blessed with a considerable amount of athletic ability more than I am but its about using your abilities when you extend plays to run when you have to and know when to throw the ball away and also give yourself and your guys enough time to get open. Thats a fine line that we talk about a lot in our room about extending plays or throwing it away, or trying to avoid the unnecessary sacks, so thats kind of the way we do things. Not every mobile quarterback has that feel, obviously. But Rodgers believes Griffin already does. I think some guys have it and some guys need to work on it. Robert definitely has it, Rodgers said. Its pretty exciting to turn on his film and watch him play. You turn on his film and its pretty impressive.

Aaron Rodgers has brutal half for Packers, fantasy owners

Sign up now! Aaron Rodgers has brutal half for Packers, fantasy owners Gear Up! Daniel Kelley, SBNation Posted: Sunday, September 22, 2013, 2:48 PM Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst halves of his career in the first half Sunday, completing only seven of his 14 attempts for 64 yards, with no touchdowns. Despite that, the Green Bay Packers lead the Cincinnati Bengals 16-14 at the half. The Bengal defense has swarmed Rodgers, and has three sacks at the half. Rodgers has completed passes to five different receivers, but no single guy has more than two receptions. He also has a single rush for two yards. Fantasy impact: Rodgers entered this game without starting running back Eddie Lacy , and lost tight end Jermichael Finley early as well – both guys with concussions. Between those losses and the fact that the Bengals have a strong defense to begin with, it’s easy to understand why Rodgers might have struggled.

QB Watch: Packers’ Aaron Rodgers

Rewind: Its not often that Aaron Rodgers plays poorly, but his performance in Sundays 34-30 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals might have been his worst since the 2009 road loss at then-winless Tampa Bay. On Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium, Rodgers posted his second-lowest passer rating (64.5) in a game he completed since that loss to the Bucs (57.6) on Nov. 8, 2009, and his lowest in a game he finished since Oct. 31, 2010, against the New York Jets (59.7). Rodgers snapped his NFL-record streak of 41 straight games without multiple interceptions, but one of his two picks was the result of a poor route by receiver James Jones . Rodgers Fast-forward: The Packers have their bye this week. Batted balls: Rodgers quick release means he doesnt usually have many passes batted down at the line of scrimmage, but the Bengals did it three times in the final two minutes on Sunday, including on his last pass on fourth-and-5 from the Cincinnati 20-yard line with 1:25 left. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Rodgers previously had only one game in the past five seasons in which three of his passes were batted down. Prediction: Rodgers will bounce back with a strong performance on Oct. 6 against the Detroit Lions because that is what he usually does after a rare poor outing. Since becoming a starter in 2008, he has followed multiple-interception games by combining to throw 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions in his next outing.

Packers’ Mike Neal Surprisingly Good After Shift To Linebacker

Packers vs. Bengals: Five key matchups

Wilson. Then, after the Packers brought back Johnny Jolly as a fourth wide-body and drafted Datone Jones in the first round to boost the interior rush, there was all the more reason to let Neal cram with Greene all the while maintaining a two-point role in the sub rush. In two games, all 24 of Neal’s snaps as a defensive lineman have been exclusively as an inside sub rusher. He’s too light now to be a base end, anyway. His 55 snaps as a linebacker break down like this: 19 on the left outside and 12 on the right outside in base, 14 on the left outside and one on the right outside in sub, and nine standing up in specialized packages. Neal and Matthews lead the team in “pressures” (sacks, knockdowns, hurries) with five, three more than anyone else (Perry has one). Neal ranks fourth on the defense in tackles per snap with one every 7.9, trailing Sam Shields, Brad Jones and A.J. Hawk (Matthews has one every 8.9, Perry one every 11.6). And Neal, who has dropped into coverage only half a dozen times or so, has the team’s only interception. “Quite frankly, the transition process is pretty much over,” said Greene.

Packers vs Bengals NFL Odds Week 3

Reggie NelsonThe Bengals arent likely to leave Nelson in single-high coverage, but he might be shell-shocked from what he saw Rodgers do to the Redskins. In a Bengals secondary with injury issues, Nelson might be forced to play a bigger role than the deep centerfielder at which he is normally used, especially when the Packers go five wide. 3. Clay Matthews vs. Andrew WhitworthWhitworth hasnt faced Matthews in a regular-season game; when the two teams played against each other in 2009, Matthews was a left outside linebacker who wasnt even a starter at that point in his career. What Whitworth is going to see on Sunday is a pass-rushing linebacker in the prime of his career and at the top of his game, and with a lot of moves thatll be new to the Bengals left tackle. 4. Packers safeties vs. Bengals tight endsJermaine Gresham and Tyler Eifert are 6-5 and 6-6 respectively, and its with those tall and talented pass catchers that the Bengals stretch the field down the deep seams. The Bengals have no doubt watched the 49ers tape and are prepared to test the Packers safeties deep, especially if Morgan Burnett is unable to play.

Packers’ pass rush tough to assess

Fresh off a Monday night win over the Steelers, the Bengals are flying high as they ride into this game. Theyll test the Packers ability to play AFC North-type football. BenJarvus Green-Ellis is a north-south runner and likes to run downhill, whereas (Giovani) Bernard is very quick. Theyre different styles, Capers said of the Bengals running backs. Green is a difference maker. Sanu is very physical. They lined him up as a running back last week and gave him the ball. Wide receiver A.J. Green is quarterback Andy Daltons favorite target. Green has caught 15 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns through the first two weeks of the season.

Packers: James Starks to start at running back vs. Bengals

They were facing two mobile quarterbacks, San Franciscos Colin Kaepernick and Washingtons Robert Griffin III , and priority No. 1, especially against Kaepernick, was to keep them contained in the pocket. That meant pass-rushers could not over-pursue and blitz opportunities would be rare. So it shouldnt come as much of a surprise that the Packers rank 24th out of 32 NFL teams with just three sacks, or that they stand 25th in sack percentage (sacks per opponent passing attempt) at 3.8 percent, well below the league average of 6.9 percent. Benny Sieu/USA TODAY Sports Clay Matthews and the Packers have not done much in the pass rush through two games. This Sunday the Packers face a considerably less mobile quarterback in Cincinnatis Andy Dalton , so the game should provide a better measure of where the Packers are from a pass-rush standpoint. Obviously we strive for sacks around here and disrupting the quarterback; well see where were at after this week, said Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews , who has one of the teams three sacks this season.

Look For Packers to Step Up Pass Rush This Week

Clay Matthews

Finley worried about his knee throughout the 2011 season. That season, like this one, was a contract year for him, and by his own admission, his concerns about being hit low altered the way he played. Finley started showing his willingness to get physical last season, when he set a franchise record for receptions by a tight end with 61 catches for 667 yards. But it wasn’t until the second half of the season, especially on a 40-yard catch-and-run at Detroit on Nov. 18, when Finley truly looked as if the knee wasn’t on his mind. Too many times before that game, he had allowed one tackler to take him down. That was definitely not the case against the Redskins last Sunday.

Packers TE Finley promising hard knocks this year

The Bengals, who dropped their season opener 24-21 to Chicago despite leading the Bears 21-10 midway through the third quarter, evened their record at 1-1 on Monday night with a spread covering 20-10 victory over the fading Steelers. Cincinnati turned in a statistically dominant performance against its hated division rival, posting 22 first downs, 407 total Randall Cobb Nike Jersey yards and 127 rush yards in 35:34 minutes of possession time. Pittsburgh finished the games with 14, 278, and 44, respectively. Green Bay should present the Bengals, and in particular their defense, with a far greater challenge this afternoon. The Packers, who improved to 1-1 on Sunday with a 38-20 destruction of the Steelers at Lambeau Field, rank second in the league in pass yards per game (390.5) and their 10.3 yards per pass average is tops in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers is, obviously, the force behind Green Bay’s potent aerial attack and he has been nothing short of brilliant through two games, throwing for 813 yards and seven touchdowns en route to a ridiculous 127.2 passer rating (second only to Peyton Manning’s 131 QBR). Rodgers play, coupled with the Bengals short rest, has Cincinnati catching three points in today’s game. The Bengals play at home last season is probably a small factor as well. Andy Dalton and company were 4-4 at Paul Brown Stadium last season and their four home wins came against clubs that finished the year a combined 21-43. And there is this little nugget in regard to the Bengals recent performance following a meeting with the Steelers.

Packers defense facing ‘old-age’ quarterback this week

Harris was considered the incumbent. Then Harris was lost for the year due to a knee injury. Starks outlasted Alex Green on roster cut-down day. Lacy ascended atop the depth chart, as expected. Then Lacy left Green Bay’s 38-20 victory over Washington in the first quarter following a headfirst tackle by Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather. Later, Meriweather left the game with his own concussion on a similar play trying to take down Starks. Lacy watched practice Wednesday from the sideline. His status for Sunday remains uncertain. McCarthy said the promising rookie was making progress, and he was involved in team meetings.

Packers defender Mike Neal (96), taking snaps at linebacker, returns an interception against the Redskins last week. It was the Packers’ only pick so far this season.

This week, the usual blitz-happy Dom Capers style should return . [Dalton’s style] allows us to be pass rushers a little bit more, said linebacker Clay Matthews. We cant ever get too crazy out there and lose our distribution in regards to our rush lanes, but it brings a smile to my face. The potential issue with the Packers blitzing on Sunday is their secondary. Its depleted. No Morgan Burnett, no Casey Hayward and probably no Jarrett Bush. Whats more, Cincinnati receiver A.J.

Five Things To Watch: Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers’ Offensive Line Will Clean Up in Pass Protection on Sunday

Cincinnati LBs I hate to put one in a negative light, but middle linebacker Rey Maualuga s coverage prowess is evocative of the display your out-of-shape buddy puts forth in a Thanksgiving pick-up game. James Harrison has some gas left in his tank, yet lacks the speed to be a force in pass protection, while Vontaze Burfict ‘s occasional mental lapses on the gridiron correlate to spacious mid-field windows. Enter Finley, who is enjoying a mid-career rejuvenation in 2013 with 11 receptions go!! for 121 and two trips to pay dirt. Randall Cobb , Jordy Nelson and James Jones might have more name recognition, but Finleys role as Aaron Rodgers security blanket is a fundamental piece to the Packers aerial attack. Matched up against a credulous Cincinnati linebacker corps, look for Finley to be targeted early and often. Speaking of Rodgers Its time we talk about the new Discount Double Check commercial Ive been one of Rodgers biggest proponents since he took the starting reins in 2008, and even in this pass-happy landscape, believe his aptitude is unparalleled at the position. And the State Farm Discount Double Check ads?

Green Bay Packers running back James Starks

It’s definitely a close battle, but Cincinnati gets the slight edge. Secondary:If Morgan Burnett and Casey Hayward were healthy, the Packers would have the advantage. However, they aren’t and that means the Packers will throw the same secondary on the field that has been dominated in the first two weeks of the season. While the Bengals’ secondary isn’t great, it’s easily better than the Packers as of right now. Special Teams:Cobb’s ability in the return game gives Green Bay the slight edge. Punter and kicker is basically a wash at their respective positions, but Tim Masthay of the Packers is the best tackler of the group. Packers offense vs. Bengals defense The Packers offense usually has the advantage against any defense in the league, but that might not be the case this week. The Bengals defense is ridiculously talented against both the run and the pass. The key matchup will be the interior offensive line for the Packers squaring off against the defensive line of Cincinnati.

Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals: Breaking Down Green Bay’s Game Plan

… James, for the most part, had clean reads, made good decisions and didn’t waste any steps at the hole. When James gets that big stride going and gets leaning forward, he’s a tough guy to handle.” The entire receiving corps for the Packers has been hard to handle. Besides Cobb’s hot start, Jordy Nelson has 196 yards with three touchdowns, James Jones had career highs of 11 catches and 178 yards last week, and tight end Jermichael Finley has scored in both games while totaling 121 yards. “They’re an offense that can score a lot and can score really quick,” Dalton said. “(Our) offense has to come to play this week. We’ve gotta do whatever we can to keep scoring, keep drives going.” Dalton has reached 280 yards passing in each of the first two games despite not having the wide array of talented targets Rogers does, though Green feels the Bengals are getting closer. “A lot of weapons, man,” said the All-Pro receiver, who has 15 catches for 203 yards. “That’s the biggest thing.” Besides Green developing into one of the game’s most unstoppable receivers, tight end Tyler Eifert and fellow rookie Giovanni Bernard could be fixtures for years to come.

Green Bay Packers: Jeremy Ross has some proving to do

The Bengals defense recorded 51 sacks (3rd-best) last season, so a Packers offensive line which allowed opposing defenses to record 51 sacks on quarterback Aaron Rodgers (most in NFL) should be expected to struggle, right? Wrong. The Packers defense has recorded only three sacks in two games, both games which were against mobile quarterbacks. The Bengals have recorded only two sacks, but that wasagainst the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears . Last season, both the Bears and Steelers struggled in pass protection, allowing 44 (8th-most) and 37 (t-14th most) sacks, respectively. Entering Friday, the Bears offensive line has shown massive improvement after they have allowed only one sack against the Bengals and Minnesota Vikings . With the loss of All-Pro center Maurkice Pouncey, the Steelers offensive line has continued to struggle, allowing seven sacks (t-7th most). The problem for the Bengals is that they are facing a more mobile quarterback on Sunday than Jay Cutler and Ben Roethlisberger and a statistically better offensive line than the Steelers. The Packers running game even showed great improvement since the second half of their season opening loss against the San Francisco 49ers , which makes the offense one of the leagues most dangerous units.

Green Bay Packers at Cincinnati Bengals

And, well, the Packers found Ross on the street. They always could scavenge for someone new. Former New York Jets running back/returner Joe McKnight worked out for the team three weeks ago. Ross isn’t panicking at all. He’s two games into a long season. He’s also not kidding himself. The late-season cameo in 2012 gave him a puncher’s chance. He broke out for a 58-yard punt return against Tennessee and a 44-yard kick return at Minnesota. As Ross says, “That’s not enough — I have to make more plays.” He’s in Green Bay for one reason above all.

A-Rod, Packers take hot hand into Cincy

“If we can get that out of him every game, he adds another dimension.” With Lacy’s status for this weekend likely not decided until week’s end, Starks and Johnathan Franklin could see extended work. “Really going into last week and even into this week, the plan was to have Eddie and James kind of play to a certain pattern of things we were trying to do. We’ll just continue that,” said McCarthy. Though they were playing with a sizeable lead, the Packers did allow 20 second-half points to the Redskins after letting the 49ers put up 20 over the last 30 minutes of action in Week 1. McCarthy would like his defense to play strong from start to finish this weekend and that will mean that linebacker A.J. Hawk will need to keep an eye on Cincinnati’s duel-threat in the backfield while cornerbacks Tramon Williams and Sam Shields deal with star Bengals wideout A.J. Green (15 receptions, 2 TD). “The defense had a great start. (Washington) didn’t convert a third down until the score was 31-0, but we gave up 20 points down the stretch there,” noted McCarthy. “It’s just unnecessary production when you look at the tape.” As teams focus on taking away Green, Dalton made use of Cincinnati’s first two picks in the most recent draft, Bernard and tight end and first-round choice Tyler Eifert. Bernard became the first Bengals rookie to score a rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game since fullback Craig Taylor in 1989.

(Above stats from 2012 regular season) Thoughts: The 49ers fell in the Super Bowl to Baltimore while the Packers season ended at the hands of San Francisco a year ago. In this game, I like the 49ers to win in yet another close game. With that said, give me Green Bay with the points as well as the under. *For more on this match up, click here.

Hamstring to sideline Packers’ Casey Hayward for at least a month

A recurring hamstring injury will keep cornerback Casey Hayward on the sideline for at least a month. The Packers hope he can return Week 5 against the Lions.

We’ll just move forward and expect the guys to play at a high level.” Also on the injury report, cornerback Jarrett Bush (ankle) is probable. Ready or not: Seneca Wallace glanced toward Aaron Rodgers to his left and summed up his role in Green Bay. “Just trying to help this man out,” Wallace said. He’s been here five days. Can he? Wallace says so. And he’s one play away from being the Packers’ quarterback. For any quarterback, this would be a whirlwind transition. Wallace wasn’t eased through each installation phase in Green Bay. Instead, his assimilation will come through week-to-week game plans. Wallace does believe he’s in a position to help Rodgers and the Packers this weekend at San Francisco.

They almost never trade for players. They almost never claim players on waivers. They almost never sign unrestricted free agents. It isn’t close to “The Packer Way,” the title of a book authored by former general manager Ron Wolf in 1998. Easier said than done. The Falcons, yet again, believe that this is the year they finally get over the top and get back to the Super Bowl. They had that goal within their sights last season only to cough up a 10-point lead to San Francisco in the NFC title game. Both of these teams are built around dynamic passing attacks the host Saints with Drew Brees, Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston leading the way; the Falcons featuring Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez. The question on the New Orleans sideline: Is the defense capable of holding its own? Atlanta was far from perfect on that side of the football last season but still managed to cobble together a unit that finished fifth best in points allowed. The Saints, off that disastrous defensive showing in 2012, already have lost three key contributors to season-ending injuries, and a fourth (Jonathan Vilma) for several weeks. The remaining pieces, including burgeoning star Cam Jordan and rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro, will look to new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan for guidance. The Falcons, meanwhile, used their first- and second-round picks in the 2012 draft on CBs Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford, respectively. That duo will be tasked with replacing Dunta Robinson, just as ex-Giant Osi Umenyiora has to fill John Abrahams shoes up front.

“Obviously if you can’t stop the run, that’s football 101.” Kaepernick averaged 10.6 yards per rush in three postseason games and 9.98 yards per pass attempt, nearly leading the 49ers back from a 22-point third-quarter deficit before they fell 34-31 to Baltimore in Super Bowl XLVII. Frank Gore ran for more than 110 yards and a touchdown in each matchup with the Packers last season, but the 49ers were far from the only ones who had little trouble running on them. From December on, including its two playoff games, Green Bay allowed an NFL-worst 5.81 yards per carry. Linebacker Clay Matthews signed a five-year, $66 million extension in the offseason, and along with fellow linebacker Nick Perry – whose rookie season ended in mid-October due to a wrist injury – a Packers pass rush that finished fourth in the league with 47 sacks should be in good shape. “We had an entire offseason to focus on last year’s loss, having time to kind of figure out a way to defend (Kaepernick),” Matthews said. “We obviously like to think we’re better prepared to defend that type of offense and what he brings to the table.” San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh’s biggest concern is keeping his quarterback healthy. Harbaugh went to the league for clarity about when Kaepernick is supposed to be safe before declaring himself a runner, and says he plans to talk to the officials prior to the game. Packers coach Mike McCarthy, meanwhile, simply wants to keep Kaepernick in the pocket. “The reality is, it is a new year, this is a different game, and we’re prepared for a totally different outcome,” McCarthy said Wednesday.

Clay Matthews Wanted To ‘be That Guy’

Clay Matthews Contract Extension: Packers Sign Pro Bowl Linebacker To New Deal

He had a crew cut in his early college days. His dad liked that. When Clay III made the bold move to grow it out, he had months of mushroom-top bad-hair days that made him hide under a beanie. “I don’t think anyone would even talk to me, as far as females,” he says. “It was pretty bad. “You see long hair and, first of all, it’s not the norm. But it kind of represents how I approach this game and approach life. Just kind of living on the edge, so to speak. That’s kind of how I play.” ‘He’s an animal’ Sometimes, perhaps, it’s better to go unnoticed. Matthews’ six sacks in the first two weeks of this season earned him the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Month award.

Defensive tackle B.J. Raji may also get a long-term offer. Two weeks after reports began circling the Packers were nearing an agreement with the four-time Pro Bowl player, Matthews tweeted a photo of himself signing his new five-year extension with the team on Wednesday afternoon. “Trivial amongst the recent tragic news, but happy to continue my career in Green Bay!” Matthews wrote. The Packers have been working the past few weeks on extensions for both Matthews and quarterback Aaron Rodgers. There was some thought the two deals could get done at simultaneously given both players are represented by David Dunn. However, a league source recently told Press-Gazette Media an agreement with Matthews appeared to be further along than Rodgers, whose camp continues to negotiate a deal that likely will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history. The only player in team history to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first four NFL seasons, Matthews was entering the final season of the five-year rookie contract he signed with the Packers when they selected him 26th overall in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Matthews ranks fifth in team history (since 1982) with the 42 1/2 career sacks and No. 2 in franchise postseason annals with 7 1/2 career sacks. He has registered three 10-sack seasons (No.

Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins was shelved with a neck injury in September, and Peprah has struggled as his replacement. Collins was the leader of the defense and an “exceptional athlete,” in Matthews words and without him, the secondary has struggled to stay in sync. “I’m new in the starting role,” says Peprah, who was drafted and waived by the Giants in 2006. “It took me a couple games to get comfortable. That didn’t show last month, when the Giants passing game produced four plays of 20 or more yards, in large part because of Peprah. It was Peprah in coverage on Travis Beckum ‘s 67-yard catch-and-run TD on the third play of the game. Peprah was run off the play on Victor Cruz ‘s 42-yard catch in the second quarter. And the safety’s false step on a play-action fake in the third quarter led to a 51-yard catch for Hakeem Nicks .

Packers lock up Matthews with new contract

“I’m not a fan of that, and I’m not afraid to say that,” the Green Bay Packers star linebacker told USA TODAY Sports. “The availability of the athletes is already so great to fans, the organization and the media, but now to add the locker room our one sanctuary, which is even taken over by the media and now you throw in cameras? “You think ‘cameras in the locker room’ and what does that conjure up images of? It’s a privacy issue. I know they’re trying to give the fans more of an experience, but what more can you do? We do interviews on the sideline, there’s social media. You can’t leave the parking lot without people swarming your cars. I’m not a fan of it.” Cameras will be installed in each home team’s locker room to provide video (but no audio) that can be shown on stadium videoboards and through in-stadium wireless applications. While it’s reflective of the league’s ever-growing reach, the behind-the-scenes peek flows from a marketing plan to offer more bang for the buck for fans who attend games at the stadiums. Packers make Clay Matthews the highest paid linebacker

When he came back from the injury, he had seven sacks in the final five games, so the injury did not affect his performance. He said he continues to work in the off-season to try to avoid the pulls. “I’m always changing my plans as far as what I do each and every year trying to get to the bottom of injuries or eliminate that and be the best player I can when I’m on the field and eliminate those issues,” he said. “I’m working hard. I know we catch a little heat sometimes that we like to build through the draft and develop our players and we’ve done a great job of that,” Matthews said. “Our free agents are the ones who were up on their contracts. It’s no different than Aaron, myself or whoever’s up next. I’ll leave that to them, but for the most part we’ve had some success here over the last few years in maintaining keep players and I don’t see it to be any different.” Matthews was set to earn a base of $3.73 million this season in the final year of his rookie deal, signed after the Packers made him the 26th pick in the 2009 draft. But the 26-year-old’s price tag has gone up considerably as he has become one of the top linebackers in the NFL. He had 42 sacks in his first four seasons, fifth-best in the NFL during that span. He has finished in the top five in the league in sacks in two of the last three seasons, with 13 in 2010 and 13 in 2012. He was fourth in the NFL in sacks last season after missing four games with a hamstring injury. Matthews has three 10-sack seasons, third-best in Packers history, and nine games with two or more sacks. The son of Clay Matthews Jr., who played linebacker for 19 NFL seasons in Cleveland and Atlanta, and nephew of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, Matthews is the only player in Packers history to make the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons. Matthews also has four interceptions in 58 games, including two that were returned for touchdowns.
