Packers QB Aaron Rodgers not getting many snaps this preseason, coaches not worried about it

But Rodgers acknowledged Thursday “it is a little different” to know he’ll report to training camp next week without the two most productive receivers of his tenure as the Pack’s franchise quarterback. “Not having those two and a good friend of mine, Charles Woodson, who I played with for a long time just like those guys that’s different,” Rodgers told USA TODAY Sports at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe. “So, we’re a different football team. Lacking a little in the experience part, but making up for it in the talent and the young guys that we brought in.” Jennings, 29, got a five-year, $47.5 million contract from the Minnesota Vikings in March despite missing eight games last season because of injuries. Driver, 38, retired in February. The two have combined for 567 catches since Rodgers, 29, took over for Brett Favre as the starting quarterback in 2008. But both posted career lows last season 36 catches for Jennings, eight for Driver that accounted for only 11.9% of Rodgers’ 371 completions as younger players developed. The Packers’ four leading receivers were Randall Cobb (80 catches for 954 yards, eight touchdowns), James Jones (64-784-14), tight end Jermichael Finley (61-667-2) and Jordy Nelson (49-745-7), who had 15 touchdowns in 2011 before battling injuries last season. As Rodgers pointed out, “they’re not really young guys,” either. Cobb, 22, is entering his third year, but Nelson and Finley are entering their sixth seasons and Jones his seventh.

Examining Rodgers’ reduced playing time

Hes completed 17 of 24 passes (70.8 percent) for 237 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, one sack and a passer rating of 102.3. In last weeks loss to Seattle in the third preseason game, which is traditionally when the starters play the longest, Rodgers played only one series and 10 snaps. Rodgers played six possessions and 41 snaps in the Packers third preseason game last year at Cincinnati. McCarthy wouldnt say whether Rodgers will play only one series or not at all against the Chiefs. Not to avoid the question, (but) its important to get the work tomorrow before we set on exactly who will play, he said. But McCarthy did say he believes Rodgers is prepared to face the 49ers if he doesnt take another snap in a game. Id say Aarons in his game ready shape. Hes been very sharp, McCarthy said. I feel very confident that Aarons ready to go. When Rodgers ascended to the starting job in 2008 after three years behind Brett Favre, he played 16 series and 93 snaps in four preseason games. In the preseason finale against Tennessee that year, he played just one snap, throwing a 68-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on the opening play.

Eddie Lacy came out of the nation’s best college football program at Alabama and made his mark in the premier Southeastern Conference. You’d think the Green Bay Packers rookie running back would have seen his share of knockout talent. Yet he was awestruck the first time he practiced with Aaron Rodgers. “My first impression was more of a fan’s reaction,” Lacy told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday after an organized team activity session. “I’m in the huddle with him, and I’m thinking, ‘This is Aaron Rodgers.'” That made the sharp-shooting quarterback chuckle. He can’t forget where he came from; his NFL narrative is stocked with a Super Bowl crown, league MVP honors and Brett Favre but is not complete without the chapter on the humiliation of his draft-day plummet eight years ago, when he went from the potential No.1 pick all the way to 24th overall. “That gives you a good perspective on how things can change,” Rodgers told USA TODAY Sports.

Last year in the preseason, he went 14 series and 79 total plays. AP Photo/Tom Lynn Aaron Rodgers played 10 snaps against Seattle, and is unlikely to play much in the preseason finale. Considering that Rodgers and the starters almost never play much in the preseason finale, which this year is Thursday at Kansas City, its worth asking a couple of questions: Has Rodgers seen enough live action to sharpen his game for a tough season opener at San Francisco? Has coach Mike McCarthy spent too much Clay Matthews Jersey time this preseason trying to pick the bottom of the roster rather than focusing on his most important players? Were going to trust the process, McCarthy said after Fridays game. I feel very good about the process. You cant sometimes have it both ways. We try. We want to win the game. We wanted to win tonight, especially at home, but there was more information that was needed. Rodgers went into the game knowing he would play only the first quarter, even though in preseason game No.

The stadium restaurant has been offering a concoction from a different player or coach each week since the start of training camp, with Rodgers recipe on the menu until Friday. It includes: Mayo Ranch Peanut Butter? Yes, peanut butter, along with jalapeno, avocado, mayo, ranch and bacon. All of these ingredients tend to be amazing on their own but together? Even his new backup Vince Young probably thinks thats an excessive dinner . Its all for a good cause, as ten percent of the proceeds from each players burger will go towards a charity of his choice. Rodgers charity is The MACC (Midwestern Athletes Against Childhood Cancers) Fund, which he has been heavily involved with during his time in Wisconsin. The four previous entries were submitted byCoach Mike McCarthy, Ryan Pickett, Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson. The final recipe will be the Claymaker, a concoction by linebacker Clay Matthews that includes bacon, fried egg, cheddar cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomato and a crispy onion ring.

Graham Harrell to be cut by Green Bay Packers

Could tackle be a weak spot for Packers?

David Bakhtiari could be the Packers’ starting left tackle, a decision that some personnel officials from other teams are questioning.

McCarthy gave the longtime backup one last chance to prove himself in Friday’s 17-10 preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks . After entering the game in the middle of the first quarter, Harrell failed to lead a single scoring drive in five series (four with the first-team offense). Although McCarthy always had high hopes for Harrell because of his toughness and instincts, the former Texas Tech star hasn’t shown the necessary arm strength or pocket presence to succeed as an NFL backup. Harrell managed a paltry 4.02 yards per attempt in three preseason games. His career preseason averages in four years include a 56.0 percent completion rate, 5.4 yards per attempt and just five touchdowns on 195 throws.

Vince Young has apparently earned a job in Green Bay, as Packers reportedly will cut Graham Harrell

— Seattle backup quarterback Brady Quinn connected with Stephen Williams on a 42-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to break a tie and give the Seahawks a 17-10 preseason victory over the Green Bay Packers on Friday night. Seahawks starter Russell Wilson completed 11 of 17 passes for 126 yards but was intercepted twice. Christine Michael rushed for 97 yards on 11 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, to lead Seattle (3-0). Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 4 of 7 passes for 47 yards in one series that ended in a field goal and included a 22-yard pass to tight end Jermichael Finley. Vince Young, contending for a backup job behind Rodgers, was 6-of-7 passing for 41 yards and a 1-yard touchdown strike to Jonathan Amosa in the third quarter. Young also ran three times for 31 yards. Packers rookie Eddie Lacy carried eight times for minus-5 yards after gaining 40 yards on eight carries in a win last week over St. Louis. Fellow Green Bay running back DuJuan Harrris suffered a knee injury on an 11-yard screen pass in the second quarter.

The game on Sept. 24 ended with Golden Tate ‘s disputed touchdown catch after tussling for the ball with Packers safety M.D. Jennings that was upheld on review by replacement officials. At wide receiver, rookie seventh-round picks Kevin Dorsey (24 snaps) and Charles Johnson (12) played in their first game after missing the bulk of camp. Dorsey didn’t get much of a chance in the passing game but his blocking stood out. He kept going after people, one time flattening cornerback Jeremy Lane on a scramble by Vince Young. He also delivered a jarring stiff arm to former Packers cornerback Will Blackmon on his lone reception. The sample size was too small on Johnson. He remains a strapping, small-school mystery man. Not over yet: After Greg Van Roten played so well against Arizona and in practice Aug. 2-7, he established himself as the front-runner to be the No.7 offensive lineman and the top backup at three interior positions. Van Roten wasn’t as good in St.

Sports Tweet 0 Vince Young ‘s NFL career looked to be in trouble when he couldn’t make the Buffalo Bills ‘ roster last year. It really seemed dead when training camps started and he still wasn’t on a team. When the Green Bay Packers signed Young on Aug. 5, he still had a long way to go to here. actually earn a job. The former third overall pick didn’t know the offense, and he wasn’t exactly a developmental quarterback at age 30. But it appears Young has earned himself a job. [Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Football: Don’t wait, sign up today! ] ESPN and the NFL Network reported that Graham Harrell will be cut, which is a clear indication the Packers have seen enough out of Young to trust him as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. The only other reserve quarterback on the roster, if Harrell is cut as expected, is B.J.

When Lacy did get the opportunity, he certainly didnt impress, carrying the rock eight times for minus five yards. Of course to Lacys credit, no Packers running back had a night worth writing home about. Could this have the makings of the dreaded running back-by-committee? Jermichael Finley is a guy I have kept a close eye on as he has tremendous fantasy upside. Coming off a four-reception 78-yard outing a week ago, Finley caught two balls for 28 yards. He did catch an apparent touchdown that was later over ruled by replay.

2013 NFL season preview: Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers 2013 season preview (CBSSports.com graphic)

ET) Packers @ Vikings: 10/27 (8:30 p.m. ET) With Greg Jennings (and now, Donald Driver) chirping so much in the offseason about how playing for Green Bay and catching passes from Aaron Rodgers is such a terrible lot in life, you have to figure it’s because Jennings is jealous that receivers like Jordy Nelson , Randall Cobb and James Jones have the chance to become ultra-stars while playing on the same squad as Rodgers. To be fair, that superstar status has yet to fall upon tight end Jermichael Finley . Rodgers might be the best player in the league, and everybody on Green Bay’s offense benefits. This, of course, assumes left tackle David Bakhtiari , the fourth-round draft pick who stepped into that spot after Bryan Bulaga ‘s season-ending injury, and right tackle Marshall Newhouse can keep him from getting hit. It’d also be nice for the Packers if they can get production from the running backs. That was the thinking behind Green Bay taking running back Eddie Lacy in the second round of this year’s draft after Alex Green ‘s 464 yards led the squad last season. While coach Mike McCarthy said earlier in the preseason that DuJuan Harris was the starter in that moment, it seems unlikely Lacy will stay in a backup role for long. He’s the best option at this point, and for the price the team paid for him, it should expect Clay Matthews Youth Jersey results quickly. Harris and fourth-round pick Johnathan Franklin also should get carries. Defense: One of the bigger problems for the Packers in the past couple of seasons has been the secondary.

Packers’ MD Jennings tries to get past call

Yes, that one, with the replacement referees and Golden Tate’s disputed touchdown. For as much as others bring up the infamous call, Jennings isn’t stuck in the past. He’ll have more pressing matters on his mind when Seattle visits Lambeau Field for a preseason game Friday night. The post-Charles Woodson era is under way in the Green Bay secondary, where Jennings is locked in a training camp duel with Jerron McMillan at strong safety. “It’s close, close enough that we haven’t made a decision yet,” safeties coach Darren Perry said. “It will probably come down to the end.” Well, Friday night represents a chance for Jennings to create some separation – and maybe exorcise some bad memories, too. “All the time, it’s something that’s stuck with me unfortunately,” Jennings said about the play. “It’s something that I’m trying to get over. I don’t want to be remembered by that play. I just try to go out there and play football.” As if the task of following veteran defensive leader Woodson wasn’t tough enough.

Randall Cobb toughing it out

Sports Randall Cobb toughing it out By Aaron Wilson | National Football Post Wed, Aug 14, 2013 1:30 PM EDT Tweet 0 Although his right biceps injury is clearly bothering him, according to reporters, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb continues to practice . It’s a balancing act for the Packers and Cobb: getting him enough practice time to prepare for the season while not aggravating the injury and making it worse. “Trying to be smart and be tough at the same time is difficult for me,” Cobb told reporters, via ESPN. “But I understand that I have limitations, and I have to be smart about it. But it’s hard and difficult at times. “I know at some point during the season I’m going to be in pain, and play, and I’m going to have to be productive when I do play. So trying to push through right now is more of a mindset for me. It’s nothing to be worried about. I may look like I’m in a lot of pain, and I may be in a lot of pain, but I’ll be fine.” Cobb acknowledged that it’s not smart for him to be practicing, raising the question of why, As for Packers coach Mike McCarthy, he downplayed the situation after holding Cobb out last Friday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Packers WR Randall Cobb hurting with biceps injury

By the end of Tuesdays practice, the former Alcoa High School star was wincing, holding his right arm close to his body and clearly in pain during an 11-on-11 competitive team period. Yeah, I have some pain in it. So (Im) just dealing with that, Cobb said. The hardest part for me is, Im a tough guy, I want to be on the field. I dont like missing practice. I hate missing practice. So trying to be smart and be tough at the same time is difficult for me, but I understand that I have limitations and I have to be smart about it.

Randall Cobb’s 2013 Fantasy Football Outlook

What Cobb has going for him is that he plays for an offense that loves the passing game. Green Bay is a pass-oriented big-play attack with arguable the top QB in the NFL in Aaron Rodgers. Thats a huge plus. Head Coach Mike McCarthy and QB Aaron Rodgers understand, after last season, that they have a legitimate weapon in Cobb that can play outside or in the slot. Cobb is a speedster. He has the ability to turn a 5 yard reception into a 70 yard TD. As a fantasy owner, wouldnt you like to have a guy that has the potential to score on ANY reception? I know I do.

Aaron Rodgers, Johnny Manziel: Rodgers ‘Feels Bad’ For Texas A&M, Heisman Trophy Winner Johnny Football

During a far-ranging Sports Illustrated interview, Rodgers added I mean hes made some decisions. I just think, hes a 20-year-old kid, and I wish he could just live like a 20-year-old. Ten years ago, when I was in college, nobody was following anyone around. I could walk around campus and no one knew who I was. No Twitter. Facebook was just starting. I didnt even know what my Berkeley.edu address was. I couldnt get a Facebook page. So thats how things have changed. Like Us on Facebook Rodgers said it all to say he feels theres too much access to players, locker rooms and the like these days and the bottom-line result of it all doesnt bode well for the game. I love our game, but to me theres too much access, he told SI. Its way over the top.

Aaron Rodgers feels bad for Johnny Manziel

I feel like Im where I should be. Rodgers then spoke of being the teams longest-tenured player (a title he assumed after wide receiver Donald Drivers retirement), of how hes seeing the game (Im playing fast, but my mind is slow, which is where you want to be), and of how hes enjoying taking fewer snaps this camp as backups Graham Harrell, Vince Young and B.J. Coleman battle while hes on a pitch count. Later, though, Rodgers spoke of the real reason he feels good the vibe hes getting from his team. Im having a blast, I really am. I love this group of guys, Rodgers explained. I think its a young group. It feels young, theres an influx of energy. Weve seen a lot of guys fighting for positions, but a lot of guys stepping up and letting more of their personality out. I think when you can get to that comfort zone where youre playing really fast and playing well but also able to be yourself, its just fun for everybody else. Its contagious. Whether that vibe translates into greater success remains to be seen.

Donald Driver Attempts to Explain the Aaron Rodgers-Greg Jennings Situation

Banjo has started to show up during Packers camp and his well-anticipated play on a Young throw into the end zone was definitely the highlight for the first-year player from SMU. It got him mentioned by McCarthy and earned him an impromptu press conference at his locker. “Let’s be honest,” McCarthy said after discussing the race between M.D. Jennings and JerronMcMillian for a starting safety position, “Banjo comes in here and I love the way he played. He was one of the guys we recognized in our team meeting (this week).” The 5-10, 207-pound Banjo is the kind of guy it’s hard not to pull for. Last year, he was invited to Pittsburgh and Oakland rookie camps on a tryout basis but was not signed by either team and spent the entire 2012 season trying to stay in shape and attending various regional scouting combines. Jacksonville signed him a week before the ’13 draft and he took part in off-season workouts there. But less than a week before camp started, he was released. The Packers signed him three days later, on July 28. “He did some good things the other night,” safeties coach Darren Perry said.

Finley is growing in Rodgers’ eyes

[+] Enlarge Matthew Stockman/Getty Images This week at Packers camp is just the latest time it’s been clear that Aaron Rodgers (left) likes having Jermichael Finley on the team. I think a guy like Jermichael Finleys had an excellent camp, Rodgers said. Its fun to watch him make some of the plays that he wasnt making three or four years ago as far as being able to read a defense quickly and diagnosis it and get into his route. Hes been very consistent for us, and hes been able to stay healthy. One week earlier, Rodgers said something similar about Finley. Ive been really impressed with Jermichael, Rodgers said at the time. I think hes had an excellent camp. Hes been running his routes well. Something clicked last year midseason, and he really started to take off, and its carried over this spring. He got himself in unbelievable shape, and hes come in and been dominating out there.

For Rodgers, life is good

He felt like if you did something bad, you do it. Right. So basically, Aaron Rodgers isn’t being a leader by taking the blame for his receivers running crappy routes. It all makes perfect sense now. It’s no secret that part of being a quarterback (and the highest paid player on the team in most cases) means taking more heat when things go wrong, but to suggest that Rodgers is somehow passing the buck and less of a leader because he holds guys accountable is a little petty. For a guy who has made a career out of being the sort of anti-diva of pass catchers, this feels pretty wide receiver-y. Rodgers recently told Peter King for an article on MMQB , “I want to be the best. I want to be counted on by this organization and the fans. I want to be someone they know is going to bring it every single week.

Donald Driver jumps into the debate on Aaron Rodgers

And now, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers put in his 2 cents. Speaking to SI.com’s Peter King , Rodgers admitted he felt sorry for Manziel. “I feel bad for Johnny Manziel. I mean, he’s made some decisions I just think, he’s a 20-year-old kid, and I wish he could just live like a 20-year-old.” Though Rodgers didn’t give an opinion on whether it is wrong or right that Manziel allegedly took money for autographs or his opinions on the NCAA, he did speak about the general scrutiny that has followed Manziel over the past year. “Ten years ago, when I was in college, nobody was following anyone around,” he said. “I could walk around campus [at Cal] and no one knew who I was. No Twitter. Facebook was just starting. I didn’t even know what my Berkeley.edu address was. I couldn’t get a Facebook page.

Packers’ Jordy Nelson says his race helps him succeed

Jordy Nelson out 4-6 weeks after knee surgery

How far will WR Nelson drop?

Maybe I’m a little biased because he is a teammate, but from watching him day one to right now, totally different player.” Quarterback Aaron Rodgers agrees with his receivers. “When you see Jordy out there, you think, ‘Oh well, he’s a white wide receiver. He won’t be very athletic,” Rodgers said on his weekly ESPNMilwaukee radio show . “I am not sure why he keeps sneaking up on guys.” Eventually, opponents are going to have to dismiss the white receiver stereotype – or continue to pay the consequences. Nelson has caught 34 passes for 633 on the season, including seven touchdowns, making him second on the team in receptions and yardage.

Doctors attempted to correct a nerve issue in Nelson’s knee that has bothered him since his days in college, a league source told ESPN. The issue has flared up periodically and unexpectedly, including at the beginning of this summer’s camp. Nelson goes ‘Ozzy’ in video

Losses this offseason are mostly to blame. Greg Jennings , who caught 425 passes for 6,537 yards and 56 touchdowns over seven years as the the offense’s do-it-all receiver, left to sign a free-agent deal with the Minnesota Vikings this spring. But even when he went down for eight games last season to injury, the Packers remained a dominant passing team in large part because the offense could lean on the likes of Nelson, James Jones and Randall Cobb in Green Bay’s heavily used three-receiver sets. Losing Jennings takes the security blanket of four quality receivers out of the equation. While much less of a loss, the Packers also said goodbye this offseason to veteran Donald Driver, who retired from the NFL after 14 seasons in Green Bay. He caught just eight passes last season but was a reliable veteran who could play any of the receiver positions in a pinch. The depth behind the top three is now much more a question mark. By all accounts, second-year receiver Jarrett Boykin appears to have the inside track to becoming the team’s new No. 4 receiver. While his story (he went from a rookie tryout to being selected to the 53-man roster) in 2012 was inspiring, and early returns from training camp this summer have been encouraging, he’s still mostly an unknown. As a rookie, he caught just five passes for 27 yards. In the event that a receiver like Nelson was lost, Boykin would become a de facto starter as the offense’s No.

How Much Will Jordy Nelson’s Injury Really Affect Green Bay Packers Offense?

Per McCarthy, Nelson will miss the rest of the Packers offseason program after undergoing a “procedure” on his knee. The Packers coach is “hopeful” that Nelson will be ready for Week 1 against the 49ers but the timing of the injury is certainly concerning. Nelson played in just 12 games in 2012 — and just 10 of which were starts — with a hamstring injury, though he did still manage 49 catches for 745 yards last season. That was somewhat of a disappointment after a breakout year in 2011 when Nelson caught 68 passes for 1,263 yards while emerging as one of Aaron Rodgers favorite targets. McCarthy did say that left tackle Bryan Bulaga is still not officially ruled out for the season , despite reports, but the team was waiting on another medical opinion to confirm his status. Still, for a team as likely to challenge for a Super Bowl run as Green Bay, there’ve been an awful lot of injuries (even minor ones) to major players pretty early in the season.

Nelson goes ‘Ozzy’ in video By Amy Bickel – The Hutchinson News – abickel@hutchnews.com For Jordy Nelson, there’s no place like … Wisconsin. With all the flooding the past week, I finally viewed a video someone posted on my Facebook page of the former Kansas State University wide receiver and current Green Bay Packer promoting Wisconsin tourism in a funny, yet bizarre, commercial. ———-advertisement———– Some of you probably already have seen the commercial promoting Wisconsin tourism – a “Wizard of Oz”-type parody. It starts with a scenic shot of Riley, Kansas, and Jordy passing the football with his wife. Yet, apparently, unlike Dorothy, he doesn’t want to go back to Kansas when Glinda tells him all he has to do is click his heels (ruby red cleats, by the way) three times and say, “There’s no place like home.” But who would when you’re making seven digits as a football star? Not that Nelson won’t be home someday. He still travels to the family farm in the offseason to help with the operation.

Packers lose Sanders in scrimmage against Norcross

Packers’ Bakhtiari may be protector Rodgers needed

Sanders was hurt on the opening kickoff of the game when teammate Bull Barge rolled up on his leg. Sanders is the second Packers defensive player to suffer a severe injury in the last 2 1/2 months. Brandon Key tore in medial collateral ligament in his knee on the final day of spring practice in May. Im deeply concerned, Propst said on Monday. One thing I have said is that we cant withstand too many injuries. And now weve lost two of our three most consistent defensive players. Sanders can play both corner and safety on defense and was expected to get some snaps at running back for the Packers as well this season. Propst did say that Keys rehab from his May 31 knee surgery is ahead of schedule and he could dress for the season-opener against Grayson on Aug. 24 in the Corky Kell Classic in the Georgia Dome. He is getting healthy quicker than expected, Propst said, adding that Key will begin change-of-direction work today, when he also could don pads. He will not begin contact work today, however.

Despite the dropoff, Journal Broadcast Group executive vice president Steve Wexler said Monday the game did quite well in the ratings and the Milwaukee-based company was very pleased. aThe game peaked at a 20 rating and averaged a 16.5, even while being blacked out on Time Warner,a Wexler told me via email. Time Warner Cable and Journal Broadcast Group disagree on the term to use for why the station has not been available to the cable companyas southeast Wisconsin subscribers since July 25. Clay Matthews Youth Jersey The two companies blame each other for the situation and have been unable to agree to the fee Time Warner Cable pays Journal Broadcast to carry the station. Wexler said the overnight ratings from Nielsen may have under-counted the actual viewership. aThere were many homes where a (Time Warner Cable) customer may have been watching the game over-the-air with an antenna (such as mine), which may or may not have been captured in the overnight numbers,a Wexler said. The WTMJ average ratings from throughout the Packers game were down 8.3 ratings points, which equals an estimated 74,883 households. The station still easily topped the ratings for the time period. The Packers game on Telemundo station WYTU-TV (Channel 27) ranked second with an audience rating ranging from 2.1 to 3.6 depending on the time.

Packers practice report: Longwell’s advice

So (I’m) just dealing with that,” Cobb said. ”The hardest part for me is, I’m a tough guy, I want to be on the field. I don’t like missing practice. I hate missing practice. So trying to be smart and be tough at the same time is difficult for me, but I understand that I have limitations and I have to be smart about it. But it’s hard and difficult at times.” Asked if he was smart Tuesday, Cobb replied simply, ”No.” The Packers can’t afford to lose Cobb, who led the team in receiving last year (80 receptions, 954 yards, eight touchdowns). Not only is wide receiver Jordy Nelson sidelined for the rest of camp after having a nerve procedure done on his knee, but Cobb and his versatility are vital to the Packers’ offense. Coach Mike McCarthy undoubtedly would prefer Cobb not try to be a tough guy. It was McCarthy who stopped right guard T.J.

St. Louis Sat8:00 PM Packers’ Bakhtiari may be protector Rodgers needed By The Sports Xchange | The SportsXchange Sun, Aug 11, 2013 2:40 PM EDT Tweet 0 GREEN BAY, Wis. — If the Green Bay Packers were looking for the silver lining in a 17-0 preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, all they had to do was look at quarterback Aaron Rodgers . He was still standing. The All-Pro quarterback completed only three of five passes for 62 yards, but the best statistic was that he was not sacked, not even touched, in large part because of rookie left tackle David Bakhtiari . It appears Bakhtiari may be a good replacement for Bryan Bulaga , who is out for the season after tearing an ACL last week. Bakhtiari, a fourth-round draft pick out of Colorado, looked the part of a reliable left tackle as he played the full first half. “I didn’t get touched tonight,” Rodgers said. “We had a few dropbacks, so I’m sure he was pretty good over there. It’s nice when you’re not worried about him, and tonight I wasn’t worried about him. He’s a confident kid.

Im done kicking. But that doesnt mean he wont help the team he played for from 1997-2005 with their kicking situation. Longwell stuck around long enough after his retirement news conference to watch practice and talk with veteran kicker Mason Crosby and his challenger for the job, Giorgio Tavecchio . Sporting News/Sporting News/Getty Images Kicker Ryan Longwell retired from the NFL on Tuesday as a member of the Green Bay Packers. Longwell has connections to both kickers. He befriended Crosby after he left Green Bay and signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. The two have kept in regular contact, and Longwell has been a public supporter of Crosby even throughout Crosbys struggles last season, when he made a league-worst 63.6 percent of his field goals. Meanwhile, Longwell and Tavecchio share the same alma mater, the University of California. Ive been fortunate to be able to talk to Ryan throughout my career and obviously followed him before I got here, Crosby said. Its awesome today that he got to retire as a Packer. I pick his brain sometimes on different things, but at the same time today was really awesome for him. When asked if he had any advice for Crosby, Longwell said: I think as long as his rhythm is fine, hes one of the best in the league. Longwell saw the Packers kickers at their best. Both went 8-for-8 in practice, converting field goals of 33, 34, 39, 43, 45, 48, 50 and 54 yards.

“As receivers, we’ve talked about it.” Nelson told the Press Gazette . “I know [cornerbacks coach] Joe Whitt tells me all the time, when all the rookies come in, he gives them the heads up, ‘Don’t let him fool ya.’ That’s fine with me.” Packer teammate Greg Jennings said, “He uses that to his advantage.” “It’s not because he’s the white guy. A lot of it has to do with the fact that guys look at him say, “Okay, yeah, he’s the white guy, he can’t be that good.’ Well, he is that good.” “It’s easy for someone to say, ‘Oh yeah, he’s like one of those other white receivers,'” Jennings, who is black, told the newspaper. “He’s not. — The Green Bay Packers have another injured starter – receiver Jordy Nelson . Football Today Jeff Saturday tells Robert Flores which knee injury will hurt the Packers more, Bryan Bulaga or Jordy Nelson. More Podcasts A day after losing left tackle Bryan Bulaga to a knee injury, Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced Tuesday that Nelson underwent knee surgery on Monday and will miss the remainder of the preseason. Doctors attempted to correct a nerve issue in Nelson’s knee that has bothered him since his days in college, a league source told ESPN. The issue has flared up periodically and unexpectedly, including at the beginning of this summer’s camp. Nelson felt like he could have played with the pain all season, taking medication and missing practice, but he opted to undergo the surgery that he has been told will correct the problem. Packers wide receiver James Jones also underwent a similar procedure that helped him deal with the condition. Jason Avant is the next best option. James Casey is listed as the top tight end. Michael Vick is downgraded because of the lack of weapons. Jackson is still the only receiver to draft out of Philadelphia, and hes a WR2/3. Jordy Nelson, WR, GB Nelson had knee surgery this past week and the early reports are that hell miss 4-6 weeks and he could be back for Week 1. The surgery was just to clean up nerve damage that had been lingering. While Nelson did miss time last year, it was because of hamstring and ankle injuries. If the knee was bothering him, it didnt cause him to miss time. Its hard to say where Nelson should be drafted. Look to target him in the middle to late rounds.

Green Bay Packers: Backup Quarterback Is a Real Mess Right Now

Harrell fumbled on a handoff as the Packers were just yards away from the New Orleans Saints goal line. The Saints went on to score a touchdown after the turnover, and the Packers were fortunate to win that game, 28-27. Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images After Harrell was given six series to try and move the ball with very little success in Friday night’s loss, the Packers surprisingly went to the newly signed Young. Young was just 1-of-3 passing the ball, but he did produce two first downs, one on his lone completion and another by scrambling for five yards. Not earth-shattering stats, to be sure, but not bad after trying to learn the Mike McCarthy offensive system for just a couple of days. B.J. Coleman then took over at quarterback and was only 2-of-7 for 15 yards. This was coming off an awful performance in the Family Night scrimmage. Bottom line, expect Rodgers to get the majority of his preseason action the third exhibition game versus the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau Field on August 23.

Cardinals vs. Packers game preview: Arizona looks to capitalize on fresh start

The two biggest pass-rushers the Packers have on their defensive line other than Jones are Daniels and Neal. Daniels needs to keep his motor running, and Neal needs to get back on the field and not become the injury-prone player he was his first two years in the NFL. Backup Quarterback Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports I recently did a story about the situation at backup quarterback. The situation is not a good onenot at this time,at least. Every NFL team wants a backup quarterback who has the ability to win a couple of games if the situation arises. Packer fans surely remember that is exactly what Zeke Bratkowski did when he backed up Bart Starr in the 1960s when Starr was injured. If nothing else, a quality backup will allow a team to later trade him for some decent compensation. In the last 20 years, the Packers have done exactly that with players like Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks and Matt Flynn . Right now, the backup quarterback situation in Green Bay is up in the air, and the Packers told the world when they signed veteran Vince Young shortly after the Family Night scrimmage. Graham Harrell and B.J.

Playmakers on defense like Patrick Peterson and Darnell Dockett are healthy, however, so Arizona shouldn’t struggle any more than it has in the past. Local Takes: Packers Tex Western from Acme Packing Company says not to expect much to be shown from the Packers : Don’t expect to see much of the Packers’ starters (at least Aaron Rodgers or Clay Matthews ) after about the second series. Left tackle Bryan Bulaga injured his knee at the Packers’ open scrimmage on Saturday and appears to have torn his ACL — he is expected to miss the entire season. Jordy Nelson had some knee surgery this week to correct a nerve problem and he’ll be out until at least week one. Local Takes: Cardinals Jess Root of Revenge of the Birds says that the Cardinals’ passing game will be improved : Well, after the abject failure of 2012, it is hard not to be excited for the passing game. Palmer is a guy that can get the ball down the field. Bruce Arians runs an offense that really moves the ball. Palmer had over 4,000 yards for the Raiders .

Rookie receiver Walker shines for Packers

The Green Bay Packers open the preseason Friday night against the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field. Here are five things to watch: 1. David Bakhtiari . In most preseason openers, Packers coach Mike McCarthy plays his starters only a few series. But look for new starting left tackle Bakhtiari to stay on the field even after the rest of the No. 1 offensive line retires for the night. He needs to learn to play the position at this level and speed and see the things hes going to see in Week 1, McCarthy said. McCarthy tabbed the fourth-round pick from Colorado to start after Bryan Bulaga sustained a season-ending knee injury, and so far the 21-year-old from the University of Colorado has performed well. To his credit, he has picked things up really nicely and done a good job for being book smart, but he transfers that onto the field, Packers offensive line coach James Campen said.

What to watch: Packers-Cardinals

My eyes got big. Benny Sieu/USA TODAY Sports Tyrone Walker made the most of his opportunity and led the Packers with five catches against Arizona. Then Walker thought about it for a second and added: The moment might have been too big for me if he threw it to me. Little about the rest of the game was too big for Walker, who led the Packers with five catches, good for 41 yards. Not bad for a guy whose NFL career started with a tryout in the Packers rookie orientation camp back in May. It was his only shot. But that was a familiar situation for Walker. He said only one college, Illinois State, was interested in him coming out of high school.

Angelo Pease , RB, Kansas State In fairness, there’s no way Angelo Pease makes the final roster without multiple injuries at the running back position. It’s common knowledge that Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin are locks for the 53 with at least two of Alex Green , James Starks, and DuJuan Harris joining them. Even if the Packers decide to move on from the fullback position, that doesn’t leave any room for the undrafted Pease. However, only Lacy and Starks can run with the kind of power Pease provides. Those backs are rare in the NFL, and if Pease passes through waivers, the Packers would be wise to stash him on the practice squad. Jason Hirschhorn covers the Green Bay Packers for Acme Packing Co.
